Homework - Film Chain

Production.

The 5 stages of producing a film are:

  1. Development
  2. Pre-production
  3. Production
  4. Pro-production
  5. Development
The main producers of films in America are:
  1. 20th Century Fox
  2. Paramount Pictures
  3. Warmer Bro's
The man who owned 20th Century Fox was William Fox. Brad Grey, who was previously a television producer, is currently the CEO of Paramount Pictures and has got Gail Berman (one of the original producers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer) into the corporate offices as President. The founders for Warner Bro's are Albert, Harry, Sam and Jack Warner.

Independent Producer means when an individual production studio makes their films outside the studio rarely using it.

Distribution.

Distribution means selling the film to companies that are ready for exhibition. It involves aquiring a film from the producers and trying to make it reach the widest audience by selling it to the exhibitors, like cinemas. It also involves promoting the film and getting them on DVD's.

The film distributor is the person that distributes the films. It can either be a company or an individual responsible for marketing the film. The distributor may set the release date for the film and how it is going to be exhibited e.g. directly to public or theatrically or home viewing.

Theatrically screening is the traditional way of distributing a film. A film festival is an organised presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues.
Marketing.

Marketing happens before the distribution as it involves advertising the film to get more people knowing the film is out and to get a bigger audience around the world.

Different types of marketing for films are:
  1. Trailers
  2. Bus adverts
  3. Happy Meals
  4. Internet Banner Ads
  5. Facebook Pages
  6. Twitter
  7. Radio Ads and Interviews
  8. Billboards
  9. Blogs
  10. Magazines

Exhibition.

Audiences get to see films by going to the cinema to see the big block buster films that have came out or they can go on the internet and download/ watch films for free that are lower budget films that are not being shown at the cinema. They can also buy DVD's to watch the films at home.

The box office is a place at a theater or cinema where the tickets are bought or reserved.

The BFI stands for the British Film Industry which is a charitable organisation that encourages the development of the arts of film and television in the UK. It promotes education about film, television and moving images  and their impact on society. It was also made to establish and establish the history of the moving images and heritage of the United Kingdom.

Homework- The Film Industry

Production

Pre- Production
There are three stages of production which pre-production, production and finally post production. Pre production is when everything is identified, mise en scene, characters and other things. The script is written at this stage.

Production
This is when the film is carried out when all the filming. All the scenes would be planned out in the planned setting. The director would decide how many shots to take for a specific scene. Everything must be done correctly as it is impossible to go back.

Post-Production
This is mainly to do with editing, the person editing takes all the scenes and edits them and puts them together then the film is 'locked' so no further edits are able to be made.

The owners of the studio decide how the movies are published, this has impact on what movies are made as producers want to go studios that are famous so they can make more money on their films, this means that they may have to create a specific genre of a film just to be able to use a particular.

An independant film is a professional film production produced mostly or completely outside of the major film studio system.

Distribution

Distribution is the moment when a film is shared out to different consumers. Companies such as Fox Century distribute films.

Film Chain

Production
First of all there is a stage called pre-production, at this stage the production is broken down into separate sections like the locations, props, cast members etc. At this stage the script is written and a detailed schedule is produced. Then there is the main production where all the filming happens, all scenes are filmed and the director shoots as many times he/she feels is appropriate. Then there is post-production this is mainly the editing stage. Firstly the editor makes a rough cut version of the film which sifts and sorts the good cuts from the bad cuts, then a real seamless version is made which is trimmed and snipped into perfectly filmed shots. There are many well known film producers such as James Cameron , Michael Man and john Singleton who produced films such as heat and aliens who work for big filming companies such as sony, fox and warner brothers. the ownership of the studio may have an impact on the films they make because they may decide to make films that attract certain people and have certain target audience. An independent production is a production over which an artist has creative, artistic and editorial control.

Distribution
Film distribution is the process that the movie is seen by an audience, most of the time the film will be distributed by the producer however some production companies have people who have assigned roles to distributing the final product. The traditional way to release is a film is through film reels which is frequently used by a distributing team. A new way to distribute film may be through digital devices such as the internet or perhaps DVDs. Film festivals give a chance for the more underground film producers of getting a shot of standing out and make themselves known to potential buyers. Distributors may have particular times to distribute certain films at certain times because it may affect the amount of viewers they have, for example they wouldn't release a film the same week another major film is being released because it will affect the amount if viewers they have. If a film can't secure a distribution deal that means that no one will be aware of the film and will not be well known meaning they will be losing profit and not gaining.

Marketing
Marketing differentiates from distribution as marketing is mainly about displaying the production to the public instead of other producers etc.

Popular worldwide films such a Spider-Man can be promoted in other countries as it can be translated into their language on their advertisement such as posters and billboards. Another example is the titanic.

Exhibition
Many people can see films nowadays through sources like DVDS, Netflix, cinemas, film festivals and television. A box office is the amount of admissions and financial profit made from the viewing of a film, it is useful when identifying the success if a particular film as the profit is easily accessible and clear to view what films are making the most money. Mainly the production and distributors receive most of the profit received from the box office. Cinemas make most of their money from their refreshments and some from the success of the film. Cinemas attract customers by things like ticket discounts (orange wednesdays) and concession deals (popcorn)

BFI?
The British film institute is an organisation which aims at the success of British films and producers. The British film institute help with funding and screening in order for them to be well known and seen nationally and perhaps internationally. Seun Opara

Production
The production of films is important because it sets the town for the entire film. If film production is poor then it is going to negatively impact on the whole project. Pre-Production is the stage of planning stage. They plan everything they are going to do and the film is broken down into individual scenes so all the visual effects and props can be put in place and identified. Usually there is a detailed schedule produced and so that the necessary elements or people are available for film making and to the film makers , arrangements are made for appropriate times.
Production is when the filming is being carried out. Every scene planned in the Pre Production is filmed in their relevant locations. It is done as many times as the director sees fit until perfection. Great care is often taken to make sure everything is done to high standards and every needed shot is taken. However it is sometimes difficult or impossible to go back or repeat certain events and scenes especially later into production.
Post-Production. This is where everything that has been shot and recorded is compiled into the final film by the editor. First the editor must find the best shots of each scene. Next is to fine cut - make all the scenes flow together seamless and into a story from. Trimming is shortening scenes and cutting out all the unneeded bits of it. As well as editing the scenes everything else must be added on top such as music , graphics and menu. Once this is all done the film is 'Locked' meaning no one can make anymore changes.

Distribution
The distribution if films is very important , one could argue is the most important due to the fact that it is the wide media spread and advertisement of the film. Certain films are expected to do better than others based on the story line , historical content or all star lineup. It is where completed films are brought to life and connected with the audience through different means and methods. Films like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , Guardians of the Galaxy and The Hobbit where heavily distributed due to how well they were expected to do. It must also be sustained in the market place not just released. Premiers and TV adverts are one of many ways films are distributed to the world.

Marketing
As i said in the distribution paragraph , it is about getting the film to the future audiences. However this is before it actually gets there this is the stage they go through. It is all the trailers you see on youtube and TV , all the posters on billboards and buses. Even sticking a toy affiliated with the movie in a happy meal with the poster on the side of the box is a heavily used and effective way of promoting films. Film makers also have to push themselves and market themselves. This way if the directors and actors receive critical acclaim for the films the led and took part in they are likely to land themselves more jobs and roles and in Hollywood - he most profitable and famous movie industry in the world - that means a lot of money and power.

Exhibition
These are the companies that house the films you see on a day to day basis. These are companies such as Paramount and Sony , picture houses such as Odeon and Vue. A natural entry route into exhibition is to gain employment at a art house or picture house , i.e Vue. Chains employ a large amount of people to deal with the tickets , foods and beverages at the cinemas and since this is where cinemas tend to make a bulk of their profit it is highly regarded.
